A few weeks ago, I met with other Digital Learning Coaches from across the state. During this two day session, we had the opportunity to learn about Sphero. Yes, this little device was cool, but what else could we do with it? Luckily, the group from our district loves a challenge. We also loved the Sphero. And so began our quest.
We came back and filled out a requisition. It was denied. Being educators, we understand the value of failure...and perseverance. If one thing is clear, middle school teachers don't give up that easily and six out of seven of us are middle school educators. We began our quest to document all the ways these devices could bring concepts to life for students in our district. Not just math concepts, either. In fact, after reaching out to the Twitterverse, we found many ideas incorporating art, music, science, and language arts! We combined these ideas and are still collaborating on a document that features our findings. I love learning about how others are using these devices! Who's to say if that data finally swayed the CTO or if it was our tenacity. We were, and ARE, committed to getting these devices into classrooms across the district. We know that the future career options for today's students are undefined. We need to do our best to prepare them and equip them with experiences with technology that they might not have at home. The little beauties arrived a week or so ago. We are starting by making sure that our department knows how they function and that they are more than just little toys. We have to know how they work so we can support our teachers that use them. We are connecting the learners of today with the opportunities of tomorrow...one step at a time.
